We had a good turnout with players from Las Vegas, New York, Maine, Denmark and the UK. Maybe next year we can get more than two continents. Our playgroup hasn't seen much activity lately and I haven't built many decks, so I grabbed a Nephandi deck that I thought might like to be tweaked for Origins.

In round 1 my rust really showed as I preyed on Hugh's bigcap Venrue (claiming to be a Cailean deck). I played my first Haven Uncovered backwards when I should have played it forwards and didn't see another one. I started to wonder if my deck might be missing a few crucial cards. Probably good to check for that BEFORE the tournament. Anyway, Hugh effectively back-ousted me with an Anarchist Uprising and a few other votes and took the table.

Round 2 had me preying on Kevin Mergen, who brought up The Baron. I had an outrageous start going 4th with 3 Nephandi in hand and nobody to stop me from getting them, so I had 5 out in the blink of an eye. Table threat, yeah, so better make it a quick game. The Baron got burned up by a Molotov and Kevin poolsacked, which was fine because I could safely bleed him for about 7 per turn. Another player at the table, also named Kevin, was building up to something immense with an Ishtarri breed-boon deck. He was using Undele to grab Con Boons and generate tons of pool. The game quickly came down to him and me. Kevin was well-situated and just needed to kill me before running out of steam - he had no pool worries, but then he made a crucial mistake and Undele got burned. No more engine and I was able to wear him down with Dragonbound (lots of torporized Bamba) for the win.

I preyed on a very nice Lasombra Black Hand deck starring Appius in round 3. I wore him down with bleeds of 1 and he had trouble getting through Adam Hulse's Toreador gun deck. The endgame was quick and brutal when most of Adam's guys had to hunt. Unmasking is busted, IMO.

Fortune smiled on me and I was seeded highly enough to choose to prey on Hugh again and make amends for my prior failure. Hugh preyed on Adam, who preyed on Forrest (Shattering Crescendo), who preyed on Jason (Kiasyd). Adam Suddened Hugh's Info Highway and so I had three Nephandi to meet Marcus Vitel. I Havened him and went in with a Molotov finding no resistance. Alas, no Graverobbing, but Nephandi clean up their own messes pretty well. Hugh was basically done. He tried for a 2nd minion, but I bounced a bleed into him and he was out.

Adam got Forrest, despite getting Shattered a bit. Jason bleed me. I played coy with Deflections and took a bleed of 4, wondering if he had another 6 for me. I had an army of Nephandi, probably at least one too many and my pool was low. Adam again found himself in the unfortunate position of having to hunt while Unmasked and was out of guys. Jason went for the kill and it looked like he'd get it, but I tossed a couple of OtQV and top-decked a Deflection. That did Adam. I was higher-seeded than Jason and had won. The final hadn't even gone on for an hour, so we played it out and Jason got me, just barely. Fun game, still probably well under an hour.

I'm a little embarrassed to post this deck because it's so clearly incomplete, but I guess those who lost to me should be even more embarrassed.

Congrats Matt! It was a fun tournament. I guess my deck was a Toreador gun deck, but that wasn't really the theme. I was surprised that it did so well, but Matt's deck was really the "rock to my Sissors". Still, the games made me realize some fixes need to the deck and I'm ready to give it a shot at Origins!

Thanks Pete for organizing!
