TOPIC: Thoughts betrayed

Thoughts betrayed

#49921 17 Jun 2013 14:08
Hello to all !
My question pertains to the "thoughts betrayed" card wich say's that : The "opposing minion cannot use cards until after combat". Question; Is the damage prevention phase part of combat ? meaning that If I play the card I could do pretty much what I want to the minion without him being able to prevent it ?
My question stems from the fact that damage prevention is not included in the combat sequence but the cards are "combat cards" as they bear the symbol...
Thanks for your help (and patience)!

I believe it says they cannot play STRIKE cards for the rest of combat. So tornsignpost, fists of death, carrion crows and prevention cards (to name but a few) are all still fair game

It's always a good idea to include cardtext

Name: Thoughts Betrayed
Cardtype: Combat
Cost: 2 blood
Discipline: Dominate
Only usable before range is determined on the first round.
[dom] Opposing minion takes 1 additional damage in the first round of combat during normal strike resolution.
[DOM] Opposing minion cannot play any strike cards for the duration of this combat.

Damage prevention is indeed part of the combat. Rulebook 6.4.6, CRR VI.C.2.c.
It can only happen when damage is applied, which is most of the time during strike resolution.

If you play Thoughts Betrayed, they can still prevent the damage from your strike with a card such as Skin of Rock
Name: Skin of Rock
Anarchs:PAG3]
Cardtype: Combat
Discipline: Fortitude
[for] Prevent 1 damage.
[FOR] Prevent 2 damage.

Skin of Rock isn't a strike card.
[EDIT]: "Strike" cards read "Strike: {do something}". Common examples: Majesty, Coma, Taste of Death.

I think the old printing said "combat cards" but thats too strong. Its current version says it prohibits strike cards. Which is cool, but rarely 3 blood cool.
Also, if you are interested, the inferior version only does damage at close range, and shpuld probably be avoided as a play at all costs.........

Yep, prevention, maneuvers, etc. are legal unless they are part of Strike:XXXX or strike card text with something similar.

If most of your cards are from Camarilla Edition or earlier (so mostly Wizards of the Coast sets), you might find leafing through web.archive.org/web/20100114131747/http:.../vtes/migration.html to be helpful. It's not going to cover absolutely every change (a few of those cards have changed since then) but it covers most of the major changes from the earlier sets - Tomb of Rameses, Thoughts Betrayed, Mind Rape etc.

It doesn't mention that Return to Innocence got significantly rewritten, then banned, or a variety of other cards being banned - Succubus Club, Memories of Mortality, Dramatic Upheaval/Kindred Restructure etc. See www.vekn.net/tournament-rules/4-tournament-game-rules
