Better late than never for reporting :)

The Australian National Opens were held in Melbourne on April 20, 2013.
16 players showed up initially, including 2 new(ish) players for their first tournament. 2 more players arrived and joined the fray for round 2.
18 players in all.

At the end of the preliminaries we had Matthew Prescott in the lead with 3 GW and 9vp! Unfortunately he had a plane to catch back to Brisbane (he did not think he would so well when booking his flight) and couldn't play the finals.

In the end Ivor Blockley was the winner with 2.5vp on the finals table.

Congrats to Ivor, indeed!

It may be worth considering modifying the qualifying rules for the next Continental Championship season to allow the Matthew Prescotts of the world a qualifying spot if they must withdraw before the finals.

Perhaps something like: "If a player ranked in the top 5 of a qualifying event must withdraw from the final table, then they are awarded the 6th qualifying spot, if any. Repeat as necessary if more than one player must withdraw."

So if someone withdraws, they get the automatic qualifying spot of the player who was bumped into the final table and so on if it occurs more than once.

When you are anvil, be patient; when a hammer, strike.

So, we can see event winner which are not qualified, because they were bumped on the final table, and won it. So they are drawback to your proposition.

Anything that would qualify people who didn't play the final will either disqualify somebody at the final table proper or make the tournament have more qualifying spot.

Many tournaments qualify more people than just the 5 which participate in the finals, particularly in Australia where 50% of those who play do. This situation would only apply when 6 or more qualify.

Don't National Championships count as qualifiers?
This is NOT the Continental Championship...
