Today we concluded our autumn tournaments with a bang. The tournament was very interesting on many levels, and the importance of table allies and politics came clear to everyone, I suppose. The only table where deals did not necessarily set the course of the game was the second table of second round where Tomi ravaged two players with his bleeds and was then ousted by Teemu with little ado.

The funny thing here is that there were many voters in the tournament this time, and they made a lot of deals to together oust two players and then see how the three-way goes. This is how Toni and Jani basically got into the finals in the first place, and almost won the whole thing together. Jani played really well and almost got his very first tournament win, but Petteri just happened to deal the finishing blow before Jani in the finals.

There were some players who obviously took the beating from others' deal making, but then again who's to tell how they should've reacted to the voters. Would it have helped if the rest of the table would've then let their own disputes rest to counter the stronger foe together? Who's to tell.

Anyways, I think there are a couple of highlights worth mentioning.

Toni Manninen played in his very first tournament with his Gargoyles. Well played, mate! You hanged in there real good. The first tournament can be a bit daunting, but you kept your cool real well. He's played for a couple of months only now.
Miika Remahl had a very, very unfortunate lot in this tournament since he juts happened to take the beating from the voters the most, and his almost sure oust was denyed by the whole of the table at last minutes. Must've been really frustrating. His Gargoyle+Nephandus deck was really interesting, though, and worked really well.
Teemu Salo just started playing for real, and this was a very close call for him as well - his seating in the finals was just a bit too bad, and even though his deck was very resilient and effective the world of politics in the game must've taken him by surprise a bit.
Sebastian took the risk of playing something else than a S&B cannonball, and got to participate in table talk a lot more; it must've been a really positive experience for a change! Also, he could've gotten into the finals if he broke a peace deal with Toni and ousted him at the last minute of one game, but very gentlemanly he kept the deal and let Toni get into the finals instead.

Overall there were loads of new, cool and thought inspiring things that happened today, and most of the guys walked away smiling. :) That's a major victory! Well done guys! Too bad I couldn't play myself (there was 11 of us, so I decided to drop).

Hopefully this deck gets in the TWDA this time! :D Petteri's earned it, properly.

Finals report:

Teemu Salo (AAA Grand Ball)
Petteri Teerikangas (Lorrie Dunsirn)
Jani Malmi (Arika & Leandro)
Tomi Sillanpää (Lasombra black hand bleeder)
Toni Karjalainen (Dmitra voter)

The game started with vampires being influenced up - Anson for Teemu, Dmitra for Toni and Henri Lavenant for Tomi. Anson started the game with equiping with an Assault Rifle, possibly mainly to defend against Petteri's Potence guys. Petteri popped up Ignazio Giovanni and Jani started with Leandro. Tomi governed down and brought up a couple of friends for Henri. A quick start against Toni - Dmitra could bloat a lot, but Tomi duly accepted the challenge.

Jani and Toni made a deal that they would first drop Tomi and Teemu, and play a three-way with the Potence fellas (who failed to draw Lorrie in the initial crypt draw - something that would cost Petteri a lot of pool since the crypt recursion now costed plenty of extra pool thanks to Leandro). Teemu fretted a lot because he was left pretty much out of the voting circles - Anson alone had little chance to affect anything Toni and Jani decided to do.

This deal resulted in Toni playing a Parity Shift to compensate Tomi's bleeds of six. Teemu wasn't too happy about that, and Tomi and Petteri noticed that Jani's and Toni's deal might doom the rest of the table before the end. Petteri could do little against Leandro yet, though, but at least he got a Preternatural Strength.

Leandro played Powerbase Montreal (something that would help others very little due to Leandro's special) and KRC'd, once again pointing the left-over one damage to Teemu. Tomi was reduced to six pool, but basically his four minions could do little less than just keep on bleeding Toni (for a total of 15 that turn). Three pool (and a villein for two) was enough to let Toni play Parity Shift from Tomi, though, and a back oust was his only way to survive; this way he gave an oust to Jani, and in turn got Jani's votes to oust Teemu.

Teemu wasn't ready to give up yet, though - a Minion Tap (after Tomi's Coven had shuffled to him) and Giant's Blood returned him to 12 pool, and a chance of surviving. Petteri couldn't do much else than some random actions, like steal Powerbase and destroy Teemu's Grand Ball. This didn't prevent Jani from KRC'ing Tomi out of the game, and pointing three points to Teemu, exactly according to their deal.

Toni decided to add insult to injury and played Temptation of Greater Power to Anson (with Assault Rifle and Heart of Cheating), and Teemu ended up on paying up 4 pool and took a loan of 5 to keep his Anson. It wasn't really too realistic of him to survive - he had 4 pool left, had to start paying back his loan, and Petteri was sitting on top of 18 pool and Montreal. The voters smashed Teemu in a couple of minutes, and the three left on the table started their mélee.

Fun stuff happened - Toni was bled, Petteri ravaged Dmitra and Jani Banished her. Even though Toni villeined Karen and rose to 10 pool Petteri could do nothing without rushes and Jani duly bled Toni out of the game with two governs. At this point it seemed very likely that Jani would take his first ever tournament win if Petteri's hand didn't start cycling very soon!

His hand didn't cycle, though, and bleeds of one didn't help too much. Luckily Petter was sitting on top of Montreal and now had a Guardian Angel. At least there was a chance of him blocking bleeds if Jani's stealth would run out.

A Haven Uncovered on Leandro turned tables though, and Ignazio ripped Leandro to pieces. So much for that troll. Arika stood against Petteri's diablerie against however, and the poor, disarmed Leandro was saved. Tomi's Coven proved to be very useful to Jani.

At this point we realized that Petteri was supposed to pay for Montreal, and we decided to let that slip. No one had realized that. Petteri couldn't really pay for it (it wouldn't even pay itself back) and decided to let it go.

Now Petteri started drawing his Haven Uncovereds and Leandro faced rushes once again. Jani's pool started to grow thinner since he had started to influence out another vampire. This time Wolfgang traded himself for Leandro, and Arika started to feel herself pretty lonely. Lucinde Alastor rose to help her out - both Jani and Petteri stood at roughly 10 pool.

Finally Petteri drew his Vessels and Blood Dolls and started bloating. The following ten minutes was spent so that Petteri stumbled on a seemingly never ending mountain of combat ends and Obedience. Finally he got Lorrie (the She-Hulk) up, and Jani got his chance - he managed to shuffle a Banishment and Enkil Cog into his hand. Jani's minions seemed to be impossible to kill - a vampire in two blood is quickly filled with a Hunting Ground, Coven and Voter Captivation.

Lorrie made impossible very possible with a couple of Immortal Grapples and Slams soon enough and Arika (now Famed) was rid of her friends again. Caroline Bishops was sacrificed to diablerise Lucinde. With 20 minutes on the clock Arika made her attempts to reduce Petteri's 8 pool, but Petteri played a second Delaying Tactics and Arika's KRC was returned to Jani's hand. This didn't slow down Jani too much though, since Enkil Cog's good enough for playing that KRC before Jani's next turn.

Now, if Jani could just stay alive for 15 minutes he'd win - Petteri's preliminary victory points would grant him the tournament win if he could just oust Jani. It's just that the Coven made Jani unbelievably hard to kill, and his KRC's and bleeds of four threathened to oust Petteri any minute. Just at the very depletion of Petteri's deck he drew his final rush, Jani didn't have a majesty and Lorrie maimed Arika to death. At this point he could do nothing anymore and Petteri snatched his Tournament Win.

Congratulations to Petteri, even though Jani's very first tournament win was very close!

As soon as Petteri sends it to me.

Toni had a Gargoyle starter mash-up with commons found from a box we have at our local store. We dump our commons and extra cards there for free picking. Basically G4-5 gargoyles with tremere and basic techs: :VIS: combat and Razor Bats with a splash of dominate. His first deck he modified himself, mind, so it was lacking a wee bit on the rush department and was a bit unfocused on combat package. :) The basics were there, though.
