Event report + TWD: Ropecon 2017 Finnish ECQ
25 Aug 2017 07:12 #83208
by PetriWessman
The tournament was nominally an "ECQ", even though we got notified a few weeks prior to this that the next EC will not require separate qualification. The Ropecon gaming conference has now moved to the "Messukeskus" congress center in Helsinki, which is more generic and less non-euclidean than the old Dipoli site, but provides lots of room (yay!) and actual working ventilation (double yay!).
We had a total of 37 players this year, with some Swedes and even a Portugese "guest star" attending
. The preliminary rounds went quite smoothly; the gaming area was a bit noisy but nothing we couldn't handle, and we got all the rounds started without too much delay. As always, this tournament has a somewhat insane timeframe, with the finals being played in the early morning hours, but it is what it is. And hey, tradition!
Like last year, the local video crew offered to live-stream the final round from the main stage, and were heroically up until 3:30am doing just that. They also had a better setup this year, so the end result was quite nice. A big thanks to Janne Lönnqvist and Akseli "Aksu" Jalava for doing a running commentary for the final round.
The final round ended in a timeout with no full VPs awarded, so the tournament win went to Petrus "Peetu" Makkonen, with his "Guido" deck.
The finals video is here (starts at around the 14 minute mark):
I also have a separate text transcript of the finals (see below).
Some notes from the preliminary rounds:
Thanks, everyone!

Description:
Took 3GW+10VP in preliminary rounds in Ropecon EQC 2017, Finland Helsinki. Won finals with time as top seed, 0,5VP.
The Finnish title for every iteration is just 'Guido Kuolematon', no matter what's in there. Always remember to add one Guido in there to make it a Guido deck. The rest is pretty much irrelevant.
In here I was initially thinking of ways to deal with Weenie Animalism. Beast is pretty much a free minion for you when Governed down, and deals with 3 blood animalismers with a single Slam!. Put the guys in the freezer to keep up with the blood race.
Rest of the time? Remember all those times when the cross table obfuscate voter goes to 1 blood with bloody everything after rescues, no one plays interaction and they win the game the next turn? They're not playing a single combat card. Neither does Beast have to.
For extra fun times Beast is always the one who drains Pentexes. You don't really have to worry about that. As long as it's not Angelica or Gratiano you're good to go. It's not that the deck suffers if you're not playing Beast. And you can always beg for removals from cross table... Anyways, you'll get to dodge Pentex with your REAL vampires (coughguidocough) and bleed with Govern.
The crypt around Beast could be whatever. 6 Slams and Beast is all you need. Just don't think you'll have to commit a game plan on him. Don't. This could just as well be Euro Brujah. Or Arika turbo. Or Huitzi MMPA.
Put the deck together in an evening and changed a lot of cards on a whim 15 minutes before the tournament. Should use more Obfuscate and there's some room for weird tinkerings.

Event report + TWD: Ropecon 2017 Finnish ECQ was created by PetriWessman
- Tournament: Ropecon 2017 Finnish ECQ
- Date: Friday July 28th, 2017
- Place: Ropecon 2017 gaming convention, Messukeskus, Helsinki, Finland
- Players: 37
- Format: EC Continental Qualifier (constructed), 3R+F
- Organizer/judge: Petri Wessman
- Winner: Petrus "Peetu" Makkonen (see below for deck list)

The Ropecon gaming conference has now moved to the "Messukeskus" congress center in Helsinki, which is more generic and less non-euclidean than the old Dipoli site, but provides lots of room (yay!) and actual working ventilation (double yay!).

I also have a separate text transcript of the finals (see below).
Some notes from the preliminary rounds:
- Like last year, the first round had a lot of timeouts. Only half of the tables managed to finish on time. Situation improved a lot in two later rounds.
- Huge spread in deck types, no clear "flavor of the year" evident. Dominate was popular, as always.
- Pentex Subversion was easily the most common card seen on all the tables
Thanks, everyone!

@Ashur, I'm pretty sure I have your Anarch Troublemaker in my deck box! Black and worn out sleeve. Mail, or?

Great report! Thanks a lot.
Btw for english-speakers, Peetu's "Guido kuolematon" means Guido the immortal. I guess he just never goes away.

Deck Name: You have lot's of new mail, RopeCon 2017 version
Author: Mikko Moisander
Description:
Spam 419s like there is no tomorrow. Originally inspired by Bran van Stappen's 419 911, but the deck has since then evolved in completely other direction. Only the brainwash + Pentex module remains. Before the tournament I added 4 eyes of arguses and couple of telepathic misdirections after I got crushed at our weekly games. Carlton should have been in the deck and I would dearly have needed him during games, if only to contest.

Created with Secret Library v0.9.4e. (Aug 31, 2017 08:26:54)
Round 1: 1.5 VP, game timed on my untap phase with me having 8 419 in game. If only I had gotten the turn a few seconds earlier to have time to pass, as after using 419s my prey was on 3 pool with exactly 3 anarch revolts in play with me having torporised his last anach last turn.
Round 2: 4 VP +GW, 4 player game so a nice sweep. Most 419s on table was 7, I think.
Round 3: .4 VP + GW, another 4 player game and another sweep, because someone dropped out.
Only got out 6 419 in this game, but I had deal with Tiago that I would allow him to finish Tommi’s Nephandus deck (see other finalists) providing there was enough time in clock to allow us to duel it out afterward. With 1 min 30 sec left I dared not to wait any longer, but ousted both with 419s. Without the escape clause in place, in that situation I would probably have broken the deal anyway.
Finals: 0.5 VP
I had some real trouble with Tommi’s Nephandus deck on round 3, so I decided to sit as his predator to attempt to shut him down before he has time to build up. This proved to be mistake, and any other seat would probably been better, because I was a turn late with my brainwashes and had most of my minions torporised before being able to play single 419. Game timed out with 5 way jam with Peetu sailing to victory as the top seed…
If only I had gotten that game win from round 1, it would have been me with the top seed. Oh well, near missed do not count, maybe next time.
