Just typing without thinking deeper here...

What would happen regarding Carlton if Vampire X committed a diablerie, then got contested and yielded that contest to another copy of the same vampire?

Would Carlton be able to burn the NEW Vampire X?
(Is Carlton's ability directed against a _certain_ copy of a vampire and not against a vampire of a certain name?).

Hmmm, probably not. Would probably apply to non-unique vampires too and that would be a horrible can of worms. So it must be against a certain specific vampire.

And because of [LSJ 20001213]:
"Contested is out of play for most purposes.
However contested cards remember the stuff applied to them (when they are
recontrolled)."

Actually, it would be the same with a vampire being banished /laid low and another copy of the same vampire being brought in play.

Carlton "sees" it as another vampire altogether.
