@Kraus, @Ankha: If the effect needs to be more powerful, why not let Democritus' action put the unique card into play? Is putting it into play really more complicated than moving it to your hand?

My suggestion (Ankha + OP's):

Democritus can search your library for a copy of a unique card in play, reveal it, and put it into play as a +1 stealth action (this will cause that card to become contested; you cannot contest cards with yourself).

Although ReverendRevolver is touching on the idea of putting cards into play as a copy of another card, which is a worthwhile design space, should be explored. The idea of a political deck that forces contests to tax its prey's pool is a cool one IMO.

Edit: I also like Lech's suggestion of keeping the Justicar curse, hahaha.

Limiting it to putting the card into your hand means it would only function with cards that you could normally play. Allowing cards to be put directly into play could lead to some bizarre effects; potentially you could get a free Remnant or Gurchon Hall, or all sorts of cards you couldn't normally play.

Which would be pretty awesome and super unique, but would open a whole different can of worms with cards that are attached to either him or some other minion, like Enkil Cog or Infamous insurgent.

The easy solution would be to just 'attach them on Democritus'.

Good luck with that Fame or Pentex.

Once each your turn, search your library for unique card sharing a name with one controlled by another meth, and attach to Democritus. You may play it as from hand if he is ready.

If someone wants to include cards they can't normally play like Remnant or Gurchon Hall, on the off chance they could contest it using Democritus' special ability, I say more power to them.

With unique cards that are played 'on a minion', wouldn't Democritus' special necessarily follow the required targeting restrictions? Or, what Kraus hints at, ignore the targeting restrictions? So it could read:

Democritus can search your library for a copy of a unique card in play, reveal it, and put it into play as a +1 stealth action, ignoring targeting restrictions.
