Direct Intervention has to be played as the card it is cancelling is played. You don't, as is implied here, wait until after the prey has had the opportunity to bounce.
There is a separate timing window when any card is played that allows for cancellation. It follows the normal sequencing rules on who can play cancellation cards (and Wakes) in what order.
