Deck Name: Baalicious Barons
Author: Ke Carlton

4VP in the final. Mutes + Arishat + Barons for vote lock and attrition.

Fairly light stealth. Added 2x Organised Resistance and 2x Monkey Wrench
for a bit more flexibility. 6x Bait and Switch likely better than
Organised Resistance however prey jamming on bounces works.

Xeper for anti ally / legionaries. Museum for Recursion.

Thanks to Karl Schaefer for convincing me on the power of Eat the Rich.

Australia/NZ Continental Champs Report

Thanks to Steve for running a great event and Andy at Meridian Games for providing the perfect venue. This report is as best as I can remember things. Going into the event I wasn’t sure what to play. I settled on Baali Barons over Platinum Protocol due to the risk of contesting and wanting some table presence.

Round 1:
Palle Grand, Baali Barons, Kindred Spirits (Craig), Baali Vote (Chris), Shalmath (Keith).

I influenced Arishat first which caused fellow Wheat Bro Chris concern that we were going to contest. We agreed that he’d have the rest of the Baali and I’d just have Arishat. Craig got off to a quick start with constant pressure on Chris as did the Palla Grand behind me. Shalmath got Ankara and tooled up. I limited my pressure to one Kine per turn and kept a Mute in hand destined for Chris. Craig played a Lunatic Eruption on Chris’s Annizir in effect locking him down whilst continuing to bleed.

There was a window to burn my grand predator's Shalmath after a poorly phrased diablerie deal — I made the mistake of not burning Shalmath which would cost me dearly. I managed to handle the Toreador deck for the duration of Palle Grand and Craig was in range though it was not obvious as I had not played an Eat the Rich yet. After some deliberation it became clear I had secured the vote lock and ousted Craig with 4 points from Eat the Rich, with Chris having also received 4 points.

Chris then targeted one of my Baron with a Mute and Keith ousted the Toreador and got the Enkil Cog. I ousted Chris and was overly confident heading into the head to head with Xeper on his way out to steal allies. Unfortunately he was one turn late and could not steal Tye Cooper in time — Shalmath proceeded to shred my minions using a freshly summoned Talbots Chainsaw for the win. 2 VP, Keith takes the GW with 3 VP.

Round 2:
Baali Barons > Shalmath (Keith) > Old School Kyasids (Shannon) > Stanislava (Brian)

This game was a bit awkward as Keith and I had just completed a head to head and he was now my prey. So we both knew each other’s game completely. Stanislava was muted as soon as she entered play so I only had to worry about her bleeds and Shannon's bounced bleeds. I kept pressure on Keith but not too much so Shalmath would have some space to consider going forward. However by the time the Kyasids lunged and ousted Brian they were also able to bleed me for 5 on the same turn — leaving me on 2 pool with 3 dominate minions behind me. I was now too low to come to any safe deal with Keith, this forced me to oust him with 2x Reckless and 1x Kine (3 on Shannon). In the head to head I was lacking the pool required to pay infernal / call the Kines to kill Shannon without ousting myself. 1 VP, GW to Shannon.

Round 3:
Massassi Rush (Richard) > Baali Barons > Blackhand Dominate Bleed (John) > Kyasid Bleed > Stanislava (Brian)

With no game wins I needed to secure one in order to have any chance to make the final. A first turn information highway ensured an early table presence. Stanislava was muted as soon as she hit the table (at inferior to be "friendly"). Unleashed Hell's fury kept Massassi at bay early on and I just kept mild pressure on John with no more than a Kine per turn. Massassi dunked Stanislava and I rescued to keep her occupied, eventually that trick wore thin and she strolled through a trip to torpor after unleashing. This game was going to be determined by blood and torpor so I went very low in order to get to 4 minions. John's main vampire Saul Meira had been muted earlier and was running low on blood from a combination of passing votes and paying 2 to bleed for 6. He ousting the Kyasids by top decking a Foreshadowing destruction after Drop Point Network has been reversed (to get a foreshadowing destruction).

Brian now brought Hartmut Stover into play after a bounced Stanislava was blocked. Massassi dunked Stanislava and Richard bought into play a 4th minion Bakr — now 2 permanent rushes (3 including Luanda). This was too much perminate rush and required a backoust, 2x Reckless and 1x Kine did 13 pool damage to Richard ousting him. The votes also locked down Saul, leaving 1x minion to bleed Brian. Brian Villein Hartment leaving him on 4 blood, 2 after rescuing Stani, 0 after being Muted and multiple Reckless and Eat the Rich votes being called which ousted John. Garibaldi-Meucci Museum allowed for recursion of Eat the Rich and the Mute meant only Stanislava had to be dealt with. GW 4, 1 VP for John.

Final:
Oldschool Kyasids (Shannon) > Baali Barons > Kyasid Bleed (Nathaneal) > Giovani Bleed with Shamblers (Stewart) > Kindred Spirits (Craig)

Craig was top seed, Shannon second. I was seeded 3rd with 1 GW 6. The VP in round two turned out to be critical with 3 players on 1 GW 5 VP. This was settled with tournament points and a coin flip with Nathaneal 4th and Steward 5th. I chose to sit behind Nathaneal on the basis that he bleeds the heaviest and that was the most likely seat to keep away from the Shamblers. Shannon sat behind me and Craig was my grand predator.

As the only voter on the table and the most likely bleed sink, my best strategy was to maintain as low a profile as possible and minimize anything that made me the table threat. In practice this meant a maximum of 1x Kine per turn and tooling up whenever possible. A first turn Information Highway meant I could've got a new 6 cap almost every turn, this also needed to be slowed to not appear too threatening. I already had vote control and Mutes have no impact on the Prisci, so they were played on my prey for blood reduction.

The top seed Craig came out heavy and just kept bleeding with Kindred Spirits. Shannon brought out the lazy Kyasid Bartholomew who was promptly Lunatic Erupted by Craig — no one on the table removed it. This gave me space in terms of bleeding, but meant that I needed to manage blood for the rush every turn (Shannon also played Earth Swords). Nathaneal was keeping pressure on Stewart using Omme, Arcadian and Nocturns. Steward was having a rough time playing any master cards (both his predator and prey were playing 4 - 8 suddens) and had Andrea Giovanni in play, soon followed by Isabella and Gloria mostly paid with Governs. Craig had soaked a decent amount of bleeds but appeared to be in the strongest position with Shannon effectively locked down. Shannon was finally able to remove Lunatic Eruption with Quincy.

I started my turn with 3 minions on about 10 pool. Nathaneal had 7 after playing Song of Pan, Stewart about 15 with a Shambler, Craig 10 - 15 and Shannon on 8. I was in a position to oust Nathaneal however this would have meant a Shambler rush and Stewart had way too much pool. I could handle 1x Shambler rush, but not two. I bled Nathaneal for 1 twice leaving him on 5 pool. Nathaneal played Curse of Nitocris and one of Nathaneal bleeds was bounced, the other landed passing the Curse to Stewart. The Shamblers back rushed Omme and dunked him with Target Vitals (helped by Mute loss). A bleed for 1 passed the Curse to Craig. Craig bled with all 4 minions for 7 leaving Shannon on 1 pool to be killed by the Curse and transferred out Dolphin Black.

Nathaneal remained on 5 pool with Stewart on 8. I ousted using a Reckless and put the 1 on Stewart. An Anarchist uprising did 4, 5 and 4 damage leaving Stewart on 3 for the Kine that ousted him which was voter capped. I transferred out Atiena leaving me with 4 minions and 16 pool. I didn't block any of Craig's bleeds and he ran out of boost. On the next turn 3 Kines ousted Craig. GW 4, 1 VP for Craig.

A recording of the game is online, audio is corrected after a few minutes:
