Joensuu's annual Christmas tournament! Was glad to see old faces from close and afar. 15 players was a great turnout, where local ancients rose from their slumbers and elite of faraway provinces (Jyväskylä and Helsinki) filled in the holes in the ranks now that our local neonytes had scrambled off to their own home towns for the holidays.
It's only fitting that it was, again Toni Karjalainen, who took the prize - an ancient terror, who only seems to rise to compete in the tournaments and show the young 'uns how it's done.
The event's decks (14/15 collected) will be all accessible in VDB's Tournament Archive at:
www.vdb.im/tda
Here's a sneak-peak of how the deck strategy distribution looked like.
The finals reveal:
Lauri Salmi was top seed with 2GW7 from prerounds with his Shalmath. Starting from the first player we were seated as follows.
1. Toni Manninen - Fatima Rush with 10 assault rifles
2. Toni Karjalainen - Saulot midrange
3. Lauri Salmi - Shalmath
4. Petrus Makkonen - Guillaume Hackerspace rush
5. Timo Tahvanainen - Mistress Fanchon Alastor
So, it would be a very, very violent affair, as we saw. Shalmath was rushed almost immediately after being influenced out, being gunned down and burned to ashes by Dragon's Breath Rounds. It was more or less a done deal then for our top seed player.
As an insult to injury, Timo's Mistress Fanchon and friends voted for an Ancient Influence and Political Stranglehold just after Shalmath's demise, effectively removing not only Lauri's pool, but strengthening everyone else so much that it would be a very short game for Lauri. Considering Guillaume was now effectively without any pressure with Shalmath gone, it was maybe the correct idea to present them with a new predator.
Mistress got their Assault Rifle and Alastor, but between two gun decks, she and friends were gunned down, and Mistress was even diablerized, Asguresh reaching for her rifle with a gleam in his eyes. However, even with only a few minions to spare between Saulot and Timo's Tremere, their few strategic rescue operations and Toni's well-timed giant's blood and coven allowed them to retain a hold in the game.
And as it happens, a Saulot with Repulsion and Enkil Cog can dish out continuous damage. Guillaume decide to not rush backwards for one turn. Fatima doesn't find their rush on the following. Jake Washington takes the hit of another, and that is all the time Saulot needs to finish the gunners.
With 2 VPs already in hand, and the Tremere severely weakened, Toni manages to just about hang on tight against Fatima's rushes to catch Timo's last pool. The two Tonis shake hands, Saulot running away with 3 VP and duly yielding the 2 remaining to Fatima, but taking the trophy back home - once again.
