Words from the Champion:
Winning by Back Oust
Some time had passed before I got to play a Lutz deck in a tournament, so I decided to take it for a spin. The tournament structure was 2R+F (two rounds plus finals), so getting one game win was possible with this deck—maybe even more.
The final setup was really not in my favor. Seating went as follows: Majin (top seed) on Weenie Platinum Protocol; Tempek on Malkavian Dominate Bleed; me on Lutz focusing on Vote and Friends; Martin on Hecata Servitor with the updated Shroud of Decay; and Joab on an Akunanse Rush build.
The good thing was that I drew Protected Resources, Parthenon, and Minion Tap in the opening hand, so I knew I would not die fast to bleeds. One of the most impressive starts was Joab’s Matata: when it hit the table, it literally destroyed Martin’s board—his vampires were burned instead of sent to torpor, and Martin was left with one servitor that already had a heart of Nizchetus on it.
That single‑combat deck on the table was powerful—if it survived long enough, it would win—and having its predator destroyed helped Joab a lot. From that point, it was clear that the only way I could win was by helping Martin to oust Joab and keeping him low enough so I could kill him with enough time on the clock. Meanwhile, I had to avoid dying to bleeds, so my plan relied on back‑ousting and not giving anyone more than one victory point while winning the final duel.
Tempek was unlucky and didn’t get many bounces, so he was ousted first, which I liked, since it allowed me to seize the Secure Haven that was on one of his vampires. Majin, having scored the first victory point as top seed, had to go next—but I also needed to damage Joab, so I made deals to banish Matata and reduce Tempek’s bleed to one vampire.
Joab was then forced to go on the offensive: if Majin got a second point, the game would be over for everyone else. With his bleeds, I was able to back‑oust Majin while simultaneously dealing damage to Joab. After three players remained, Martin and I removed the combat deck from the table.
In the final duel, Martin was low on pool and I had enough pool to survive a couple of turns. Knowing he had Delay in hand, I simply needed to bleed him for three pool to win the game. With plenty of stealth cards in hand, I executed the plan and secured the victory.
