Thinking about Aye and Orun, based on
the recent Foundation suggestion
, I was thinking about a different mechanic.
Precise theme is missing from the example cards I've thrown together, but I'm sure we can crowbar something in from a Laibon-y source. The game need is essentially that Aye or Orun are hard to exploit, so let's try and give it a boost.
The basic aims (for me!) are:
- the card(s) are playable both for the Aye/Orun fetching, and for their own sake, and preferably not unique, so you can include a reasonable number in a deck
- preferably, the card text should be relatively short, probably for a fairly bread and butter ability, so that it could be applicable across a range of decks, and not just for that one killer deck
- the card(s) provide a potentially interesting decision for you, get the Aye/Orun or do the other thing, or hold to do the other thing later. If that's not easy to do, it should at least be okay in the later game, rather than a millstone round your neck
- the card(s) work differently to other cards, because I have a personal preference that different decks feel different
- as little book-keeping as possible, so preferably tutor some real Aye and Orun cards out in some fashion
So I started thinking about putting it on a transient card - not a master, not an action, not an event - and added:
- shouldn't stack easily, one per action if possible. I'm trying to achieve this in the examples below implicitly, by restricting them to certain, mutually exclusive action types. Two reasons: 1) that seems an interesting approach anyway, and 2) it's fairly brief, card text wise.
And so, some examples of the sort of thing I'm thinking. You can play either one version or the other, not both. I'm playing fairly fast and loose with Aye v Orun, but it's mostly just to show the sort of thing I'm thinking of:
Card Name - Bleed version
Requires a ready Laibon. Playable only during a bleed action.
[act mod] Play when a minion is attempting to block. Tap (some - 2?) untapped Aye on this vampire; the blocking minion must burn a blood or life to continue the block attempt.
[act mod] Search your ash heap and/or library (shuffle afterwards) and move up 1 Aye card to this Laibon.
Card Name - Politics version
Requires a ready Magaji. Playable only during a referendum.
1 blood
[act mod] Tap (some - 2?) untapped Orun on the vampire to force a younger vampire to abstain. This can cancel that vampire's votes and ballots.
[act mod] Search your ash heap and/or library (shuffle afterwards) and move up to 2 Orun cards to this Laibon.
This one is similar to the two above, but I was thinking about making some of the cards better/more attractive/funkier for particular clans, without making it completely exclusive to that clan.
Thinking about doing something similar on a reaction, I run into the issue that multiple reactions can be played per action. Trying to cut down on the excessive wordiness ("Only one card name can be played at this level per action" etc.), it might be possible to implicitly make it harder to play multiple of by giving it a relatively harsh requirement - here, Magaji - though it's not hard to have multiple out. Maybe it's not possible to do this well on a reaction.
As I say, I'm far from wedded to the individual card abilities - but does the style of card make you think "You know, that might spice up that moribund Laibon deck I was thinking of"?
Thoughts? Ideas? Concerns? Better, more awesome suggestions?

Card Name - Hunting/blood gain
Requires a ready Laibon. Playable only during a hunt action.
[act mod] Tap an untapped Aye card on this vampire. This action has +1 stealth (even if stealth is not yet needed) and this Laibon will gain an additional blood from the blood bank if it is successful.
[act mod] Search your ash heap and/or library (shuffle afterwards) and move 1 Aye card to this Laibon, or up to 2 Aye cards if this vampire is Guruhi.

1 blood
[reaction] Tap any number of untapped Aye or Orun cards on this Magaji; reduce the bleed amount by the number of cards you tapped.

On the action mod, follow the format of Croc's Tongue and Hide the Heart: Cancel unless you burn blood to cancel this card.
Most of the rest just need "Tap X (Aye/Orun) to..." and templating covers the need for the 'untapped aye/orun' bits.
I'd be tempted to make the bleed defence one a "up to two cards named Aye or Orun to this vampire" so you could fetch 2 Aye, or 2 Orun or 1 each.
