file Submission: Calling Song

09 Jan 2019 04:57 #92714 by Molloy
Name: Calling Song
Cardtype: action modifier / reaction
Cost: 1 blood
Discipline: Melpominee (Presence)

pre: (modifier) Only usable when an action is announced. Allies get -1 intercept this action.
mel: (modifier) As pre above but allies cannot block this action.
MEL: (reaction) Only usable when a minion is bleeding you, after blocks are declined. Choose another Methuselah other than the acting minion's controller. The acting minion is now bleeding that Methuselah. Place this card on this reacting vampire. The vampire with this card may not play another Calling Song at MEL.

Flavor text: Lafontaine was wrong: Dead is the mandible, alive the song.

World of Darkness reference: Lore of the Bloodlines p.27 (whitewolf.fandom.com/wiki/Melpominee)

How does this card address a compelling game need?: Daughters need a bit more defense. This gives them some access to bounce. The limiting clause keeps it from getting excessive. The inferior and outferior give it an alternative use so it won't be as likely to cause hand jam.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the superior :MEL: is just a standard bounce, right?

I would prefer seeing a more unique form of defense, or a new take on bleed bounce. The only thing this does differently is prevent the user from playing another one.

Maybe something like:

Daughter's Lament
:pre: effect
:mel: effect
:MEL: Gain pool equal to the greatest amount you were bled for last turn minus 1.

:gang: :CEL: :FOR: :PRO: :cap6: Gangrel. Noddist. Camarilla. Once each turn, LivesByProxy may burn 1 blood to lose Protean :PRO: until the end of the turn and gain your choice of superior Auspex :AUS:, Obfuscate :OBF:, or Potence :POT: for the current action.

No, offense but this card doesn't make any sense thematically.

For your reference this is the power description for Calling Song.

Melpominee 8: Implant multiple targets with a song that draws them to a specific location.

Are you saying that location can't be your prey's pool?

 If your prey's pool was a location then you would be right.

Ever heard the expression "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink."? Melpominee usually has a primary physical impact and secondary social impact. Mental is normally not something it does. Melpominee is not mind control. For example, the only card that Melpominee has to increase bleed is Virtuosa... which is a bit of artistically liberty since technically the only thing the power does is allow the vampire to throw their voice to multiple people.

When I look at this text, all I can think of is vampire A singing "You are going to bleed, bleed, bleed my prey!" And vampire B says, "I appreciate calling the taxi, but no..."

What you could do is cancel the action or just make blocking easier. In fact, I would recommend that you change Calling Song to something like this....

Calling Song
:action:
1 :blood:
If successfully, unlock this vampire and attach this card. Burn this card during your next unlock phase.
:mel:: This vampire does not lock to block.
:MEL:: As above and this vampire has an optional Maneuver during each combat.

DoC are already probably the best breed boon clan and can bloat like crazy, and they have free non-unique allies with intercept for defense, along with really cheap crypt, they really don't also need bounce...

If you really want to give them more defense then an action similar to Art Scam would be best fit.
