According to my script, the year-on-year TWD entries currently look like:
so 2011 has overtaken 2009 as the year with the most TWD entries, and this is before all the EC tournaments have been added.
1997 | 4 |
1998 | 15 |
1999 | 22 |
2000 | 35 |
2001 | 74 |
2002 | 92 |
2003 | 117 |
2004 | 99 |
2005 | 115 |
2006 | 113 |
2007 | 200 |
2008 | 221 |
2009 | 237 |
2010 | 211 |
2011 | 239 |
so 2011 has overtaken 2009 as the year with the most TWD entries, and this is before all the EC tournaments have been added.

What is the number of players in each year ? Still, not bad for a dead game.

Since not every entry reports numbers, and the format isn't always standardised, these figures are not absolutely correct, but should be close:
So there appears to be a bit of a drop, but I'm not sure it's significant and may be due to new groups reporting tournaments in the 10-15 player range.
A more interesting exercise would be looking at breaking numbers down geographically over the last few years, to see where the games growing and where it might be struggling, but that I'll leave to someone else.
2008 | 21.984 |
2009 | 20.597 |
2010 | 21.434 |
2011 | 19.293 |
