I picked up four bags of around 200-250 glass beads per bag from the home-improvement section of a supermarket just around the corner from work, ages ago - a good mixture of colours (clear, blue, and green). The whole lot only cost about £3, as they were on special offer. They're a little bigger than standard VTES beads, but I've never found that a major issue.

I knew I wouldn't need anywhere near that many, but it was good to have a choice of colours plus I'd have enough to cover anyone who'd forgotten their own or didn't yet have any of their own (as was the case when our local playgroup took on new players).

Thats a damn fine idea.

Yes the red ones are 2-3x the size so fitting them on a card can be a nightmare if you have any high capacity. I don't understand why purple is the only 3lb bag they offer... they should offer every color, not to mention red is just a commonly sought after color (and blue)
