Nephandus with 2 life controlled by player A is in combat with a vampire controlled by player B.
Player A announces 1R as Nephandus' strike.
Player B announces Catatonic Fear at Superior with Target Vitals as strike of their vampire.

Before player B would replace the Target Vitals...

Select the correct option:
1) Player B can't play Target Vitals with a combat ends strike, Target Vitals card is put back to player B's hand. Combat Ends as per Catatonic Fear's cardtext and Nephandus take a damage after combat ends from the Catatonic Fear. Nephandus is ready with 1 life

2) Player B can play Target Vitals, player B replaces the card. Combat End as per Catatonic Fear and Nephandus take 1 damage from Catatonic Fear + 2 more damage due to Target Vitals. Nephandus is burned.

3) Player B can't play Target Vitals with a combat ends strike, Target Vitals card is put back to player B's hand. Combat End as per Catatonic Fear's cardtext and Nephandus prevents the damage from it. Nephandus is ready with 2 life

4) Player B can play Target Vitals, replace the card. Combat End as per Catatonic Fear's cardtext and Nephandus prevents the damage from it, no additional damage is done due to Target Vitals, Nephandus is ready with 2 life. (CORRECT)

Relevant cardtexts:
Name: Nephandus
Cardtype: Ally
Clan: Tremere antitribu
Cost: 2 pool
Mage with 2 life. 0 strength, 1 bleed.
Nephandus can strike: 1R damage. Nephandus gets 1 optional press each combat. Nephandus can burn a vampire in torpor to gain 1 life as a (D) action. Each strike or damaging effect made by the opposing minion against Nephandus in combat inflicts 1 less damage.

Name: Catatonic Fear
Cardtype: Combat
Cost: 1 blood
Discipline: Presence
pre: Strike: combat ends.
PRE: As above, and inflict 1 damage to the opposing minion once combat ends if the range is close.

Name: Target Vitals
Cardtype: Combat
Aim. Only usable as this minion chooses a strike. A minion can play only one aim each strike.
If any damage from this strike is successfully inflicted on the opposing minion, they take +2 damage from this strike, and they cannot press this round. They can discard two combat cards to cancel this card as it is played.

B) It prevent only damaging effects in combat.

Each strike or damaging effect made by the opposing minion against Nephandus in combat inflicts 1 less damage.

LSJ ruling here:
groups.google.com/g/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/c/nvuXBpEaKAA/m/ymiC3yAQVOwJ

the key thing here is that the Catatonic Fear (like every strike) was played in combat, so it inflicts one less damage on Nephandus

I would rephrase the answer because Nephandus does not prevent damage

Combat End as per Catatonic Fear's cardtext and Nephandus prevents reduces the damage from it. Nephandus is ready with 2 life

4) Player B can play Target Vitals, replace the card. Combat End as per Catatonic Fear's cardtext and Nephandus prevents reduces the damage from it, no additional damage is done due to Target Vitals, Nephandus is ready with 2 life. (CORRECT)
