The ultimate problem is that online tournaments will be no way at all to police out-of-game chat, deal-making and cheating. That will mean that there will be no real way to ever have online formal tournament play.
Real life games can be the only option for genuine rated tournament play. It's matter of keeping your playgroups alive and it's not just about the cards.

There are technical solutions imaginable to all the problems with online play. However I see it much less likely that someone will invest the 100s of hours necessary to do this than some company picking up the game.
