This is an old doubt, which ruling has been altered from time to time, so I'm still needing a 'once and for all' answer.
There is many options to recover cards from the ash heap:
Pochtli
Carlotta Giovanni
Sargon Fragment
Clio's Kiss
Whispers from the Dead
Ashur Tablets
... the list goes on
What I want to know is: Is the player recovering the card(s) from the ash heap obliged to show to the others which cards he is taking back?
I assume yes, he is, as the AH is public and can be looked through before and after the action, but would like to have a confirmation from our rulemonger.

You are correct.
What cards you take back is public knowledge for that exact reason.

Pascal, the rules should state that if you are such a skilled magician that you can remove cards from your ash heap undetected, you should be allowed to do so.

@KJM:
If that rule EVER becomes part of VTES... I will NEVER play VTES with this man...
Sunovabiatch would yoink your pool while you aren't expecting it and probably rearrange his deck while you were watching!
