file Sociopath and Code of Samiel : definition of "in combat"

09 Aug 2021 08:44 #102870 by Timo

Name: Code of Samiel
[HttB:R/B1]
Cardtype: Master
Clan: Salubri antitribu
Cost: 2 pool
Burn Option
Unique.
Put this card in play. During your unlock phase, a Salubri antitribu you control can gain 1 blood. If a Salubri antitribu burns a ready vampire or sends a vampire to torpor in combat or as a (D) action, that Salubri antitribu can unlock after the end of the minion phase.
Artist: Peter Bergting

Name: Sociopath
[BH:C/PTr2]
Cardtype: Master
Master: archetype.
Put this card on a Sabbat vampire you control. Once per turn, when this vampire remains ready and burns a minion in combat or sends a vampire to torpor in combat, he or she gains 1 blood from the blood bank. A vampire can have only one archetype.
Artist: Fred Harper

Ok here are the card texts. Now, what is the definition of "in combat" for these cards. Does it means "during combat" or does it means "due to a combat card or a combat effect"

I would think it is the first one but it could be argued that a Catatonic Fear triggers these cards.

What seals the deal IMO is a card like Cobra Fangs.

A confirmation ?

Name: Catatonic Fear
[Sabbat:U, SW:U, FN:PS, CE:PTo, LoB:PI2, Third:U]
Cardtype: Combat
Cost: 1 blood
Discipline: Presence

 Strike: combat ends.
As above, and inflict 1 damage to the opposing minion once combat ends if the range is close.
Artist: Clint Langley

Name: Cobra Fangs
[LotN:R, POD:DTC]
Cardtype: Combat
Cost: 1 blood
Discipline: Serpentis
[ser] Strike: hand strike. If any damage from this strike is successfully inflicted on an opposing ally, burn that ally after action resolution.
[SER] As above, and if any damage from this strike is successfully inflicted on an opposing vampire, the opposing vampire goes to torpor during their next unlock phase.
Artist: Mike Chaney

After combat is no longer "in combat". So Catatonic Fear or Cobra Fangs won't trigger The Code of Samiel or Sociopath.

Isn’t the damage from Catatonic Fear done in the step F “Combat Ends” (from the Detailed Play Summary) which is still part of the combat....meaning that if that damage sent a vampire to torpor it has then happened "in combat"?

No, it's inflicted after the combat ends. (groups.google.com/g/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/c/KireUeOYY3c/m/nb81oLVJRyMJ) You couldn't play Disarm thanks to it for instance.

Guess I found the answer on my own to my question ...  [RTR 19970630]  states that the damage is inflicted after combat ends.

It’s because of what and how the word “once” means and how it is used...as a non-native english speaker I learned something today....would have been easier for us if “after” was used instead of “once”.

It will be the case once the card is reprinted (but they mean the same thing indeed).
