That clearly sets that "after successful/unsuccessful" are played after the action was complete.

No. "Action" modifiers are played during an action to modify that action, not out of the action.

Cancelling cards is something very specific, I'm not sure what you are talking about.

After the action has resolved, the action is not ended yet. Some action modifiers are played after action resolution (but still during the action), for instance Freak Drive:

Only usable after action resolution.
[for] Only usable if the action was successful. Unlock this vampire.
[FOR] Only usable if the action was blocked. Unlock this vampire.
