I hate those things. Typically I hit the "Undo" icon but that is not an option on the boards.

Only way would be adding empty formatting within the code e.g. :) can be accomplished with following code

:[i][/i])

The other option is to attach the smiley to the previous word, as in "I'm really happy:) !"
