I think these last couple of posts answer the question of "why eBay".

As an eBay seller, if I were routinely ignoring customers or late in responding to them, there would be some bad consequences for me (higher fees, less prominent placement in search results, eventual loss of my account). So instead I try to be very timely and responsive with shipping and emails - a lot of eBay's policies lately have been to force sellers to get bigger & take customer service seriously, or else go home.

eBay takes big fees, and gives you decent traffic, and if that's as deep as you look at it, they're overpriced. But they also give the buyer peace-of-mind and comfort with shelling out cash, because eBay will offer refunds when the seller flakes out or swindles. Arrange a purchase directly through email and there's no one that will protect the buyer when things go poorly.
