Summon the Abyss
6/30/12
San Jose, CA
2r+f Standard Constructed
20 players
Winner: Brett Schofield
Deck Name: Third Party Politics - Velya for President
Author: Brett Schofield
Description:
A somewhat traditional "tap and cap" deck backed up with the stealth offered by Vicissitude. I was pretty fortunate in that I didn't face a real wall deck, and I was the only political deck in the finals. But it is pretty ridiculous how much pool this deck can acquire.
Crypt Selection: Velya and Lambach are the stars. Obviously it is best for Velya to use Voter Cap, but refilling Lambach for future Minion Taps is pretty good. I think there are a couple of modifications that could be made to this deck. More copies of Sascha Vykos (adv) could be added - she has an amazingly good ability, but it is frustrating that she can't use Mind of the Wilds for stealth. Sames goes for Matteus, Flesh Sculptor (!Toreador) who could replace Meshenka.
Library: Over all, I was pleased with the amount of defense (combat and bounce), stealth, and vote push this deck packs. I only saw early crypt acceleration in one game, but it seems hard to justify adding any more. On hind sight, I would definitely drop the Crusade. I was surprised how often I ended using Changeling to bleed.

20 players sounds pretty darn good, especially as it has been recently discussed in this forum that the US playerbase in more or less dwindling.

There are some promising signs that we can hold out, at least for the near future. Thank you for the congratulations. I do owe a lot to the 9 players who drove up from LA to join us (6 hours for those not familiar) and to my cousin Andrew Haas and his dad Steve for hosting at their house. The first tournament Saturday was even bigger, but I'll wait to post the count until I get Robert's TWD.

6 hours drive sounds like a die-hard thing to do (I recall the Örebro guys doing more or less the same for Danish ECQ a couple years ago) -suddenly the local two hour drives seem rather trivial so there's really no excuse of me not attending tournaments in Tampere except me being a lazy ass no gooder...
Also hosting a 20 person tournament at home is really quite generous!
Good work -carry on!
