check TWD and report - Ropecon 2016 Finnish ECQ (July 29th, Helsinki, Finland)

16 Sep 2016 12:19 - 03 Dec 2016 22:15 #78319 by PetriWessman
  • Tournament: Ropecon 2016 Finnish ECQ
  • Date: Friday July 29th, 2016
  • Place: Ropecon 2015 gaming convention, Messukeskus, Helsinki, Finland
  • Players: 42
  • Format: EC Continental Qualifier (constructed), 3R+F
  • Organizer/judge: Petri Wessman
  • Winner: Janne Lönnqvist (see below for deck list)

This year's Finnish ECQ was played at the Ropecon gaming confernce, but the con itself was at a new venue -- the much larger "Messukeskus" congress center in Helsinki. As far as the tournament was concerned this was a good move, for once we had actual room and proper ventilation. Whee! Of course, the site is a bit more generic than the old Dipoli was, but hey, I'll take room and oxygen over "interesting architecture".

We had a total of 42 players, mostly Finns but we did have a couple of brave Swedes trying to wrest some points from the locals. Everything went very smoothly, thanks once again to the players who helped keep things running on time. Thanks to the Ropecon organizers, we actually got the chance to play the finals on a small stage, with live video streaming(!). The sound volumes are very low, sorry for that. If we do this next year, we'll try to get someone to narrate the game in real time (separately from the game table, in order to not disturb that). The final round was a bizarre affair, with Mikko's Muaziz Una-like horror totally dominating the first part, then getting wiped out and somewhat more normal play ensuing.

The finals video is here (scroll forward to 1:47:00):

I also have a separate text transcript of the finals (see below).

The preliminary games were a varied bunch. Once again, lots and lots of deck types, with no clear archetypes dominating. Some random notes:
  • The first round had a ridiculous number of timeouts. Only two tables managed to finish on time. No idea why.
  • I saw multiple "girls"-type decks, also multiple Kiasyd and quite a lot of Settite action
  • Janne's Stanislava managed to get two separate Fear of Mekhets during one game round (from two different players). Saw Mekhet being used quite a bit.
  • At least two Gargoyle-heavy decks, both with Hatchlings.
  • Mikko Hyvärinen actually managed to withdraw during round one. Impressive.

I tried to gather info about what PDF sets (if any) had been used in the decks, that info is in the table below (see "PDF" column).

Thanks, everyone! See you again next year :).

-Petri "Orava" Wessman

Decklists

Tournament Winner (Janne Lönnqvist)

Deck Name: Rose of the Devil's Garden
Description:
Ropecon 2016 Finnish ECQ winner.

Due to having zero time to actually build anything new I had to resort to using an old deck that had scored me one win previously (Justicar Retribution XXII on Jan 26th 2014), just added the two missing Instantaneous Transformations (and forgot about the 3rd Dreams...).

The deck is Otso Saariluoma's winning deck (Praxis Seizure XLV from Nov 30th 2008) with just few very minor tweaks so praise should go in his direction.

The finals was a weird one, starting off with accidental Anarch Convert contesting, which probably ended up hampering Mikko ever so slightly and probably slowing Lasse down a bit, although not as much as missing Nizzam in the opening crypt though. With Muazizotronic Mikko ran through his deck merely acquiring my Chandler and Nora's Unnamed -the latter took the pressure off my back. I don't recall even Mikko protesting me ousting him and thus removing Pain in the Rearside #1 (aka Tablethreat) from the table soon after Timo Banished Muaziz. At this point Lasse and Noora were in more or less damaged goods while Timo also was in the same situation as I was; a player with hardly any or no pressure. Soon Noora was ousted. I was a bit worried for a while about losing vote battle to Timo but the arrival of Genevieve (and removal of Noora's Arishat with her mistress) fixed that. Then it was, luckily, just the matter of bleeding/voting in consistent manner with enough stealth all the while avoiding the temptation of going to Archonable range. Mainly I have Mikko to thank for my victory, he built the runway from himself and Lasse and also secured my rear by tripping Noora.

Mikko Hyvärinen

Deck Name: Muaziz the table trasher
Description:
Ropecon 2016 Finnish ECQ finalist

"Muaziz the table trasher" / "I'm not here to make friends"/ (aka. "why old MTG combo players are not fun to play with")

Card notes:
- Sengir Dagger: still looking for something better
- Ghoul Retainer: goes through some stupid dodge effects+something else
- Pulse of Canaile: it _also_ has "superior" ability of +2 bleed. Seriously, information is sometimes rather critical
- Nightmare Curse: special favour for those combat monsters you really don't want to have combat with.
- Chameleon: really good for those untapped average capped vampires you don't want to waste a good rush&diablerie on.
- Revelations: Archon or no?, Deflection or no? OR just NO to something
- Ancient Influence: 20 pool dmg vote +avg.5 pool gain
- Pentex Subversion: hate it, probably totally waste of a slot. Answer to itself, but if Muaziz is pentexed before acting you probably won't find this, If Muaziz got to act, changes are that the pentexing player doesn't have enough blockers
- Madness Network: goes through Archon Investigation and "Optimally" enables T4 finishing of the game by a sweep.

Extra notes;

Anarch module is strong, but a bit complex to set up due to interaction with clan impersonation, it would probably be better to just play with some of these options:

Some Extra dmg-vote,
Book of Going Forth by Night (or whatever to say)
Immortal Grable (let the Ghoul do the aggr.poking)
Charge of the Buffalo (or some other rush I've missed)
Dominate
Thoughts Betrayed
Conditioning/Govern
That Dominate thing that allows you to tap minions
That Dominate thing that allows you to steal allies(?)

+1-2 Lear Jet/Ankara Citadel to decrease the chance of not having them in your opener. You'd rather use the Magic for something broken, instead of these, but alas, it is a difficult math for me... ;)

Game play:

Don't be afraid to go directly crosstable with the first rush if the target seems too tempting. (hey, you really want that crosstable Arika/Lutz/whatever on your team for certain!)
You are not playing "prey-predator"game, you're playing the table.

Plan A; If the table is "soft" kill&steal everything in whatever order and proceed to Sweep. If it turns out to be medium do plan B.

plan B; If table is medium Aim for 2,5 victory points by negotiating(mainly) with your grand predator, killing your preys and grand preys minions, weaken your predator enough, and attempt to Withdraw!. If this is not an option, plan C.

Plan C; Aim for a single point+withdraw, if that is not possible with the deck;

Plan D; If your prey/predator is having infinite +2 intercept on a 7&below capped Combatmonster that totally trumps your deck and you're totally unable to play through it,
start playing the Assamite Assassin for hire, and whoever lets&makes you able to play can easily negotiate what you do. Now, do your new masters bidding! ;)
(then attempt to honorably withdraw, if possible.)

The name of the winning deck ain't Rose in the Devil's Garden, but actually Rose of the Devil's Garden. :)

You know, because Tiger Army never dies!

Stanislava could be kinda envisioned to be Masumi Max, like in the video of Rose of the Devil's Garden. And the pic on Stani's card has Rose petals and such...
