TWD: Finnish Grand Prix 2019 at Ropecon
27 Aug 2019 12:03 - 23 Jan 2020 15:44 #96583
by PetriWessman
The Finnish Grand Prix was once again played at the huge Ropecon gaming convention, the site of 2020's upcoming EC tournament. The new Saturday time slot seems to work well, and even though it's a long and exhausting day there's (now) room for such luxuries as a lunch break. Yay!
We had a total of 55 players this year, which is very nice -- the second year in a row with increased attendance, after years and years of slowly diminishing player count. In addition to the Grand Prix status of the tournament, it's quite clear that the revival of the game by Black Chantry has had a huge effect.
As usual, there were a lot of deck types present, and also players with wildly differing levels of game experience. That means that even experienced players needed to be careful, since newer players may well do some very surprising things; adaptability is key. No really clear trends visible... I was honestly expecting more ally decks than I saw here, especially Legionnaires, but the local ally-heavy meta doesn't seem to have migrated much to this tournament. Lots of the usual suspects visible, of course (Unnamed power bleed, grinders and stickmen, stealth-bleed, big-cap vote, etc). One of the more amusing decks of the evening was Magnus Söder's clown car deck (among the finalists), which generated an insane amount of pool and minions when it got going.
The video production this year was elaborate and quite hightech, thanks to the (awesome!) folks at Starbacon and general tireless organizing by Janne Lönnqvist (including video narration for the whole day). We had a "black box" video environment where one table at a time could play, so one table out of 11 each round played there and the whole game was livestreamed, and the finals were as well (obviously). The first game had more explanatory narration, aimed more at new players, while the others + finals had narration going more into tactics and table situations.
In the past I've provided text transcripts of the final round here, but that seems redundant now with the video coverage. It was a very interesting final round, with lots of varied deck types (including combat), and the final win went to Martin Weinmayer with only seconds left on the clock. Stanislava wins the day (or more properly, night), once again! Congrats to Martin for yet another major tournament win.
You can view the whole day's video stream here (the finals start around the 8:07 mark):
Thanks, everyone! See you next year at the EC.

Thanks for the very nice report. I just finished watching the RopeCon final on YouTube (before seeing this post actually). I really enjoyed watching the recording. Nice to have this kind of sports commentary in the background.

Hey!
Again I didn't do the narration alone.
Although I had planned to do so.
However Inferior Ari just happened to drop by in the beginning to say "hi" and he got shanghaied to be the co-host and apparently he liked it so much he'll return next year.
So many thanks to Ari too!
And Ropecon for providing the infrastructure.
See you all next year at the European Championships in Ropecon.
We're going to stream the WHOLE THREE DAYS!

Why, many thanks!
All the thanks should go to the AMAZING technical staff!
And Ropecon for providing the gear.
We just come over to the already setup table and aimlessly start blabbing about the game we love.
