It's not a long step across from Bum's Rush to that 'art'.

Fair enough. That was probably uncalled for. Apologies.
Back to the point at hand, I'm still baffled that anyone cares this much about those Chatterton cards. Clearly, the game was on its last legs (see: it got shut down right after the publication of that set...) There wasn't, presumably, a lot of money for the art budget. All the cards that got the dubious art were re-prints of cards that needed reprinting, but hadn't been reprinted for a long time due to needing new art. The pictures were likely very cheap and done very quickly, which was probably exactly what they needed. I mean, yeah, they could have had a "get your illustration for Deflection (or whatever) printed" fan contest that would have generated plenty of free, likely more interesting, art for those cards. But that also probably would have taken more time and organization than they had manpower for at the time. On what was clearly a sinking ship.
Some of those cards are horrible. Some of them are actually kind of good for what they are. Most of them are just forgettable and certainly no more visually objectionable than other cards with bad illustrations throughout the history of the game (Ambush? Sabbat Flash? Jyhad Fake Out?)

You know it was for fun, and your name was not really quoted in a serious form, do you ?

Also, they are hidden costs in this kind of contest. At the very least, legal fees because you don't want the winner to sue you for whatever reason.

Fake Out is neutrally disappointing.
Gary Chatterton is actively rotten, shitty card art.
