Why players can commit suicide?

In my last tournament, a player wanted to commit suicide because he considered he had no options and wanted to give his point to his predator (the reasons are unknown to me)

A judge had to intervene and rule that his chances were extremely slim, but not zero, and he was not allowed to do so.

Judging this situation is totally arbitrary, and another referee could have ruled that he could have committed suicide. And the result of the game could have been very different.

Wouldn't it be better, to avoid arbitrary decisions, to completely prohibit a player from committing suicide?
