The issue has always been whether leftover prevention can be carried forward (it can't), which would never be an issue if the damage went negative.
It can. See Song of Serenity, Bonecraft, Disease etc.
Excess damage prevention does not prevent damage that isn't there.

You said it yourself, you just have more damage prevention coming from a single source than you actually need.

Correct answers from jamesatzephyr.
The only case I can think of that would "save extra prevention points" is Apparition (and I can't find a proper ruling for it).
Suppose you play sup' Apparition, and they strike: hands for 1 (which you prevent with Apparition), blur, hands for 1, you'd still have that 1 remaining point of prevention from Apparition. The reason for this is that Apparition reads "each round", and, thus, sort of "lingers".
