file Ambrosius, Robert Carter and free bleeds for 3

Ambrosius, The Ferryman (Wraith), Ally, 3 Pool:
Unique wraith with 2 life. 1 strength, 0 bleed.
Ambrosius is immune to damage that is not aggravated. He can move a retainer from your ash heap to a ready vampire you control as an action. Put 3 Pathos counters on the retainer. Remove a Pathos counter from the retainer at the beginning of each of your minion phases. When there are no Pathos counters remaining, remove the retainer from the game.

Robert Carter
Unique ghoul with 1 life.
During your untap phase, Carter's employer burns 1 blood, or Carter is burned. The vampire with this retainer gets +2 bleed.

Smudge gets Robert carter, does not pay the blood during my untap, Robert burns.
Ambrosius moves Robert to smudge, with 3 pathos counters. Smudge bleeds. During my untap smudge does not pay the blood, and Robert, now with 2 pathos counters left, moves to my ash heap.

As far as I can tell, the pathos counters are erased, allowing ambrosius to fetch me a fine new free Carter, correct?

If this is all that Ambrosius is doing, then it is not worth it: he costs 3 pool, even 2 laptops are cheaper than that. It could be an ousting method for a Giovanni Talbot Chainsaw deck.

Thank you for the completely useless ruling answer. Does anyone have an answer that actually addresses the question?

To address your answer, if he does it once, it is not worth it. However, let's for a moment assume it is not Smudge, but, say, Shalmath in Malkmath deck. That carter is worth a maximum 10 extra bleed. Then you burn him in your turn, for 0, and put him back on, for 0. Pretty much free bleed for 10, or in any other deck where you keep for him1-2 rounds before burning him before resurrecting him.

Correct, counters on cards go back to the bank when the card goes to the ash heap.

Sorry: with the forum now opening on the recent post list, I didn't notice in which section this was posted.

Why employ Robert in the first place and waste Smudge's action?

Why not just discard all copies of Robert Carter you happen to draw and move them, one by one, to a minion and bleed immediately the same turn. If you have another copy or Carter in your hand, by all means employ it to cycle a bit.
