Slag

Learjet

how often does Slags ability actualyl trigger?

We had a long widned discussion on Discord about slag and we foudn that the two most likly interpretations are:

The first card each emthuselah plays/discards, their repalcement is shown

Each card played/dsicarded, their replacement is shown

with a theoreical third option:
Only the first card played /discarded,, their repalcement is shown

The discussion came down how to apply the "During X do Y" to the ability.
What constitutes X and what constitutes y

We came to the conclusion that X is "A referendum, when a Methuselah plays or discards a card" and Y is "SHow their repalcement"

But even that left the possibility open for, once per card or once per methuselah?

The third interpretation came from "everythign that is not explcetly follwing during (in this case a referendum) must be Y.

so what is it?

Does slag get to see the card drawn by learjet, which is optional and can be drawn after the first card was drawn and seen?

found asnwer to the lerjet question:
Slag does not see the Learjet repalcement.
inferted from Agaitas
Additional draws are not subject to his ability (eg. Infernal Pursuit, Aura Reading, Learjet). [LSJ 20011202]

On a side note: If X in During X do Y is to be read as X = in a certain phase, if an additional requirement is fulfilled we should update the template in the rulebook accordingly. As it is written now, that interpretation couldn't be deduced easily from current wording imho :)

Warning: Spoiler!

Short;

While Slag is ready, all methuselah show their replacement cards for played or discarded cards to Slag's controller. Learjet portion was covered earlier.

Long;

I'll toss few additionals here to provide context with relevant rulings from the past. For some text has changed over the years as attempt has been made to make it "easier to understand" but per Ankha, old rulings apply until they are told not to.

So;
Name: Grendel the Worm-Eaten
[Jyhad:V, VTES:V, Tenth:B]
Cardtype: Vampire
Clan: Nosferatu
Group: 1
Capacity: 5
Discipline: ani pot OBF
Camarilla: While Grendel is ready, you may look at the top card of your crypt.
Artist: Richard Kane Ferguson

Grendel is example of a format "While ready, do something." Per LSJ from 2000. groups.google.com/g/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/c/a4N83aC_8ZM/m/DaAv5I3uml8J

> 2. How often can one use Grendel's (or other "while X is ready"
> vampire specials) ability? I say you can use it as much as you
> want whenever you want because of the word "while".

As often as you like.

Mind you the text at the time was "If Grendel is ready, you may..." which became "While Grendel is ready..."

I saw some discussion related to Tegyrius Advance in discord but again, Tegyrius adv text 2003 contained things like "once" and so forth that are currently lacking. Might explain why there was no rulings or questions asked back then.

Hence I feel any card with "while x" just follows the 2000's LSJ ruling on Grendel. If the condition matches and is fulfilled, there is no limit. This is reinforced by 2006 imbued Peter ruling. groups.google.com/g/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/c/Mm52DY_3fy8/m/yrwfRlN7BLQJ
Name: Peter "Outback295" Rophail

Cardtype: Imbued
Creed: Redeemer
Group: 4
Life: 4
Virtue: red ven

Yes.

Note how LSJ even points what to google to find more answers on the 2006. We sure have always liked to point to past rulings. groups.google.com/g/rec.games.trading-cards.jyhad/c/WxJVsEWWmbc/m/gbOBOI7T9kwJ

Ruligns consodering the "While" are not helpful here.
All listed rulings basically onyl say "Using Whiel does not inherintly limit the occurance of the effect"

While just gives a condition under which the effect can occur or is usable.

The 2004 ruling about "If/When" is more relevnt here, if anything, stating then "If/When X, then Y" Y occurs once per X

The wording it not quite here, but it woudl be easy to word or Imagine the effect as "When any methuselah plays or discards a card during a referendum, they show you the replacement"

I dont think it entire puts the case to rest but it gives another line of argument.
