The reasons for the bannings mostly have to do with cards being overpowered compared to their cost, simply being inappropriate for tournament play, or evidence of gambling in certain countries.

Back in Dec. 2007, when the last round of bans were issued, I put together an article on my blog , where I summarized the reasons from my point of view (as well as the dates of banning and previously banned cards).

evidence of gambling?

The following excerpt is from MTG Salvation (MTGS) Wiki

wiki.mtgsalvation.com/article/Ante
"The idea behind ante was to introduce an element of gambling to Magic, but it proved unpopular as many players did not like having to bet valuable cards and so rarely played for ante. There were also concerns inside Wizards of the Coast that playing for ante could cause official tournaments to be classed as gambling and would therefore have to adhere to the laws governing it (for example, tournament venues may have needed gambling licences.) As a result, playing for ante is now classed as an unofficial variant format, cards referring to it are no longer made and all older cards referencing ante have been banned in every sanctioned format."

When Edge Explosion (and Memories of Mortality and Protect Thine Own) were banned in the Rules Team Rulings of December 3, 2007, then Rules Coordinator L. Scott Johnson did not provide a reason.
