exclamation-circle Guardians of the Faith, a PDF VTES Set by PCK

Dear V:TES Community:

We are pleased to release our first PDF set, "Guardians of the Faith." These original cards cater to tournament players, as well as casual players, and should provide lots of new possibilities and great fun.

We purposefully designed this set to bolster the weaker Sabbat clans, improve Sabbat politics, and offer the Sabbat sect unique options that differentiate it from the other sects. From the start, part of our design philosophy for this first set was to deliberately avoid cards which require disciplines since there would be unintended consequences with respect to non-Sabbat clans. Card texts and templates were graciously reviewed multiple times by Pascal Bertrand, the V:EKN rules director. We have analyzed and modified our cards through a lengthy, multiple-round, playtest process.

Our intention has always been to develop high quality V:TES cards continuing the high standard set in the past, and to make them freely and publicly available for personal use. We are not interested in making any monetary profit. In April, we promised the public we would offer the V:EKN the opportunity to review and sanction the use of our set for tournament play, and in August, we did this. Having completed the development cycle, we are nonetheless pleased to show the wider player base the fruits of our labor and wish to thank everyone who playtested our cards and acknowledge their dedication and hard work.

The PDF files for our new set can be located here: Guardians of the Faith .

Our cards were inspired by the World of Darkness and the V:TES card game (both being “canon” sources) which were previously published by White Wolf/CCP. We understand that our cards are derivative works thereof and thus require copyright protection. In order to both maintain the integrity of our work and protect our intellectual property and that of others, we are asserting creative control of our work through the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 3.0 Unported License.

For the time being, we are not including any artwork of our cards. If V:EKN or the V:TES player base at large seems genuinely interested in the set, then we could readily source quality artwork. We have art descriptions for all our cards ready for use.

We hope you find that our cards provide new, useful and interesting opportunities for the Sabbat. We welcome any comments or feedback on the set, or suggestions for artwork. Feel free to contact us at

Work on our next Laibon-themed project has already started. Though we are still preparing for the playtesting stage, any volunteers for playtest are highly welcome!

Sincerely,
Carl Pilhatsch, Eric Chiang and Jeff Kuta

This is reckless. You guys just took a big dump on the good news we received recently. I am very disappointed in the way you decided to handle this and that you let bitterness and a misguided sense of fairness guide your decisions. I really hope that this poison pill won't derail efforts to get the game back into production.

I just facepalmed...

And the cards aren't even that great. Is that what's all the fuss was about?

So wait - you were privy to some of the playtest card names and the gist of their card text and now you publish them and claim you own the intellectual property? Does this mean I could do the same with other potential cards if I was a part of the playtest group?

I realize you claim that you originated the idea for the cards, but to be honest it can never be proven and it can be debated forever without result. The fact of the matter is that the only consequence your claiming ownership of cards is that it might decrease the chances of companies wanting to pick the game up. Great move, real mature.
