What you did was fine, although a warning would be good in addition to the removal of his VP and 6 pool. Judges have a fair amount of leeway in making their decisions so as long as you are well-versed in rules and errata, you will generally be fine. This isn't to say that you can't consult with other judges or players.

With all due respect, how is equating every single resource spent to oust a prey -- no matter that she was ousted because of a mistake -- with zero reward in any way "fine"?

considering someone was prematurely ousted and lost all chances of scoring more VPs in that round, I'd say it's perfectly "fine" to not reward cheating with 6 pool and 1 VP.

Was the cheating intentional or accidental? Would've the ousted player survived for more than 1 or 2 turns even without the incident?

WHOA WHOA WHOA

Who said it was cheating? It was explained as an honest mistake.

You are of course right. But who did say that the predator of the wrongly ousted player spent each and all of his resources to oust his prey?
It all depends on the situation, and therefore it's the judge's call. Perhaps in the above described situation it was the right decision to take away the VP and the 6 pool.

Do you remember what LSJ says almost always on such occasions? The Judge decides. Now I understand his intentions answering that way. There are so many informations we don't have. Even if MalkavianPrank would try to give us the complete background of the case we still could miss an important detail. I think we cannot judge properly being so distant.

All I can say is that your decision of taking away the VP and pool is a possible solution of that case after the VEKN Penalty Guide. Wether it is appropriate to the made mistake I cannot decide with the known informations.
