Actually, the fronts of the cards were heavily redesigned. There were similarities, but borders, colors, and shading were redesigned.
The lesson that can be learned is that the Old Guard doesn't need to be appeased in order to make the game rebirth successfully. Player outcry was negative with the relaunch and reset of L5R, and yet still the players returned to the game. A redesign would allow us to refract the rules just enough to avoid issue while still allowing the game to remain what it always has been.
