DI, Wash, DI was created by extrala
Situation during last weekend's tournament. Looks obvious to me, but I want some confirmation:

Player 1 plays War Ghoul.
Player 2 plays DI.
Player 3 plays Wash
Player 4 plays DI.

Player 1 now claimed the play of the second DI was not legal play. He reasoned that the window for "as it is played" had closed, because the Wash opened another "as it it played", which in turn automatically closes the original "as it played" window.

My reasoning on the other hand is, that you need to give all the other players a chance (impulse) to react to the "as it it played" window (playing Wash doesn't close that window).

Name: Direct Intervention
Cardtype: Master
Cost: 1 pool
Master: out-of-turn.
Cancel a minion card as it is played. No cost is paid. (If it was an action card, the acting minion doesn't tap. If it was a strike card, the minion chooses another strike.)

Based on what?

Sequence must be:
  • Player 1 plays War Ghoul (don't replace). This opens window "as played" A
    • Player 2 plays DI (don't replace). This opens window "as played" B
      • Player 3 plays Wash on DI (don't replace). This opens "as played" C
      • Nobody plays any effect during the "as played" C window. This closes the "as played" C window.
      • Player 3 would replace if there wasn't a "Do not replace clause" on Wash.
    • DI is cancelled, this closes the "as played" B window. Player 2 replaces his DI and recover the pool paid.
  • "as played" A window is still opened. Player 4 can play DI.

Your sequence is OK but there is no "recover the pool paid" because you don't pay before closing the "as played windows".

You sure about that? Because not all cards that cancel cards as it is played have text saying no cost is paid.

Yes I am sure. And it is so since the RTR 20030519 which states :

Canceling cards and retrieving costs: Cards that cancel other cards as they
are played and retrieve the cost (resulting in a loss as the cost is paid and
then a gain as the cost is retrieved) instead cancel the card and nullify the
cost (no cost is paid for the canceled card). The Anarchs version of Sudden
Reversal has the new "(no cost is paid)" wording, and other cancel cards are
to be handled similarly. Those other cards are Contingency Planning, Denial
of Aphrodite's Favor, Direct Intervention, Iron Heart, The Jones, and Rewind
Time.
