Rules update suggestion: Pre-Range into Preparation Step
I don't like "before range is determined" for the same reason. If my opponent sets the range for the round, does that mean I can't my Torn Signpost anymore?
There are a few cards that share the same timing as Immortal Grapple: Blissful Agony, Blood of Acid, The Death of My Conscience, King of the Mountain, Sanguinary Wind, Shame, and Thin Blood that you mentioned.
The window between "range is determined" and "before strikes are chosen" seems clear enough.

Question:
In case something similar would enter the rules, would you rather have it displayed in cards as a keyword or as a part of sentence structure? The latter would probably suit VtES better.
Name: Trap
[Jyhad:C, VTES:C, Sabbat:C, SW:PB2, FN:PR, CE:PB/PTo/PTr3, Anarchs:PAG2, LoB:PO3, Third:C]
Cardtype: Combat
Preparation. Only usable on the first round of combat.
During the press step, if any Methuselah has played a card earlier in the current round or during the two previous rounds, the Trap automatically provides a press to continue (either combatant can press to end).

Also, capital 'Preparation' or lower case 'preparation'? VtES treats terminology with lower case, like 'maneuver' and 'press'.
Krausedit\\ If there's need for this and we'll find an agreement on the formatting, I can take on to myself to rephrase all pre-range cards. I'll need help with collating the full list though. Not anytime soon I know, but I'll just let it out here and now.

So, adding in new words seems like a way to rub both groups the wrong way, since we will have different wordings on cards.
Now, combat deserves a sequencing sub-section in my opinion.
For new players, if we were to invest in a "starter kit" I feel a playmat with distinction would help, as would a way to mark the starter set cards for which window they play in. A visualization with a multi-colored bar with letter labels. So blue at the far left with an A is the immidiately after blocking is becoming combat beyond pre-combat action modifiers. This would be acting minion with impulse plays pres, then other minion, etc. B for determining range in green. Yellow for after range, before strikes, orange for chose strikes, red for resolving, purple for press step, each with a letter and markings by phase.
Just for starters of course, regular rules just need clarity in rule book.

Any input on the rtfs?"Only usable during the prep step of the first round of combat."
As for the wording issues, lock is doing the same already. This shouldn't be more of a hassle.
Of course it's debatable when whatever is too much for a crowd to handle. And which crowd.

I don't use the combat outline, so I won't comment it.

The work on the rulebook is a nice one. There will be a new rulebook anyway, so the combat section is likely to change anyway.
"Start of the round" works fine too, it's one less special term ("preparation/prep") to learn. As for the wording issues, lock is doing the same already. This shouldn't be more of a hassle.
