file What is "a" block?

Is "block" is a misnomer for "blocking attempt?" I think if you were to simply replace block with blocking attempt, in most cases, the issues you raise go away.

In the Psychomachia case (or Phantom Speaker), the action is blocked so an Aching Beauty would trigger. But then the action is not blocked.

Right. so it's not a misnomer. I agree that "cancel the resulting combat if any, and continue the action" is far superior to saying "the block fails."

Well, it's even better to say that the block attempt failed :)

One must be careful with Psychomachia because it was originally designed to be played "when... is attempting to block" (vtes.pl/card/Bloodlines/Psychomachia/41249)
But then the outferior Presence effect was estimated too strong, and the card switch to a card text supposed to make the action be blocked at pre, and not blocked at dai/DAI.

Then one set later, Tangle Atropos Hand was printed with the same Outferior as the old Psychomachia

Apparently, it's ok for Potence. I suppose that Psychomachia was too good in weenie presence. I'm fine with that choice.

Psychomachia was always restricted to ally and younger blockers, so weenies are not an issue. Besides, it does not change anything for a pure presence deck: if you acting at 0 stealth, anyone who attempts to block will succeed, so Psychomachia is playable anyway. The only situation I can think of where it is better not to wait for the opponent to play his intercept before you cancel the action is on a bounced stealthed bleed, and for that, once you give Tangle to :laso: and :giov: it is hard to argue that the same effect in :pre: (with extra generation restrictions) is overpowered for the Baali.

To go back to the original topic: do not mess up the core rules to accomodate one half-baked card. If there is a timing problem with Psychomachia only, then reword Psychomachia, not the rules. Spying Mission already uses the "would be succesfull" template for a similar timing. But again, I believe it is a waste of space on Psychomachia and the original text was fine.

The original topic was that "block fails" creates problems, and Psychomachia was just one example. "Block fails" appears on many cards. The updated language on Spying Mission creates more problems that it attempts to solve due to the ambiguity introduced with "would be successful," but I think changing "block fails" to "cancel the resulting combat if any, and continue the action" is a good fix because it clearly indicates what happens when.

Yes, "block fails" should of course be "block attempt fails". If someone bothers to rewrite the rulebook and/or reword cards.
