Designers' Diary entry for June 10

  • Print

Hello again!

By the time this diary entry goes out, the fifth tournament of the Week of Nightmares in Columbus, Ohio will be underway! I'm still in Brooklyn, but I'll be driving out to the NAC with the NYC crew this evening. I figured I'd get another update out before heading off to play lots of V:TES.

Round Three of playtest is in full swing. We've gotten a good amount of mid-round feedback which has enabled us to approve more library cards for artwork. At this point, we have two crypt cards and about a dozen library cards remaining to approve for artwork, pending playtest results. That puts us very much on target for an October release. We'll have a lunchtime playtester meeting at the NAC at Origins this weekend, likely during the lunch break of Day Two of the championship. It'll be a great opportunity to get more in-depth feedback and to answer any questions the playtesters have.

As for the contents of the set, the focus is on Group 6 (Group 5 for Gangrel), but not exclusively so. There will be some crypt cards for earlier groups, including an advanced vampire for each clan. When it comes to design of advanced vampires, we've given them merged abilities but our approach is to make them fully playable and effective in their unmerged versions.

We're also thrilled to announce another new artist: Carmen Cornet of Spain. She's done a few crypt cards for us, and she's a World of Darkness enthusiast, and you can check out her portfolio here:

Apologies that this wasn’t posted yesterday – the Kickstarter for my game is now live and the last few weeks have been something of a rollercoaster!

V:TES Team Play

This proposal is my own spin on the various team formats that have been suggested online. This is not required for your Returned League - as per my last post it's just another game format for you to try for fun.

In this format players should pair off into teams of 2 players. In a single friendly game this requires 4 players – two teams of 2 players each. A tournament would require multiples of 4 players (so that every table is full) and an even number of teams (so that nobody is left out). In each game each teamed pair should be sat across from each other so that they are both bleeding (and blocking) both members of another teamed pair.

Before the event each team should pick a sect and collaborate on building their decks – the choice must either be Camarilla, Sabbat, Independent or Laibon (I suggest excluding Imbued as they are not actually a sect in the World of Darkness, but you can include them too in your event if you wish). 100% of each player’s crypt should be of the chosen sect, but it may consist of any clans or individual minions which have the correct affiliation. In a tournament every team member should use the same deck for every game of the event.

Each game of V:TES should proceed as normal, using all regular tournament floor rules, errata and banned lists – with the addition that the Event cards Fall of the Camarilla and Fall of the Sabbat are banned also.

The victory conditions of each game are also altered – if either member of a team is reduced to zero pool then that team immediately loses and the game ends. Only the game win is counted.

In a tournament situation the event should be conducted in a ‘swiss’ format, seating opposing teams from most successful to least, with the final round consisting of the two teams that have won the most games in previous rounds.

Returned Vampire #3 - The Dracon

dracon_storyline

This month’s Returned vampire is the venerable Tzimisce known only as The Dracon. Last seen in the days before the fall of Constantinople in the 15th Century, the Dracon was a powerful but reclusive figure. Worshipped over the years by many of his clan – and also by those of the Obertus ghoul family – his disappearance has remained a mystery. His legend lives on, and some believe that he may return in the Final Nights to receive the knowledge and learning that his followers have amassed.

Hey, everyone!

Round Three of playtest has officially begun! We'll check in with Hugh Angseesing, the Playtest Coordinator, for a mid-round report in a few weeks. For the cards that still don't have art commissions, the mid-round report will help us green-light some of the remaining cards for artwork before the playtest round is over.

Speaking of artwork, one of our returning artists is Riccardo Fabiani. He did the artwork for Instantaneous Transformation in Danse Macabre, and he's completed a handful of pieces for the new set. In addition, he has a kickstarter for one of his projects - a personal travel diary and sketchbook of his travels through such places as Ireland, Romania, Hungary, and Norway. More information is found here:
